East Coast Café Day Trips to Aldeburgh

Famous for its operas on the beach, music, theatre and food festivals, the Suffolk seaside town of Aldeburgh is now also home  to the East Coast Café.

Situated just a few yards from the beach, the newly launched East Coast Café occupies part of an old coaching inn on the High Street. This winter/season we are organising a series of bracing – both culturally and meteorologically speaking – day/gourmet trips to the beach.

One-day trip

Arrive at noon in time for a glass of sherry or a cup of coffee before setting off on a walk along Crag Path on the sea front.

Lunch at 1.15 in the East Coast Café dining room is followed by a guided tour of Aldeburgh taking in the Martello Tower, built to withstand Napoleon, currently hosting a Gormley sculpture on its roof, Maggie Hambling’s  controversial Scallop sculpture, Benjamin Britten’s Red House, the  town Moot Hall built in 1520  and the Concert Hall and Arts and antiques Centre at Snape Maltings. Visits can be tailored to suit.

Other activities include: Shopping, visiting Aldeburgh’s many art galleries, sailing at the Yacht club, golf on the town’s 18-hole course, shooting, walks round the surrounding sea marshes and, for the brave, swimming in the North Sea.

Two-day trip

As above, but including a night’s stay at the Brudenell, White Lion or Wentworth Hotels or in one of Aldeburgh’s many guesthouses or self-catering cottages, and lunch or dinner at the East Coast Café, tea or breakfast on the Brudenell’s seaside terrace or tea by the fire at the Wentworth.

Travel by Train

Trains depart from Liverpool street on the hour, change at Ipswich and take the branch line through stunning countryside to Saxmundham. The journey takes roughly 2hrs.

Taxi pick up (included) Taxis for 4/8 will meet you at Saxmundham and drive you to Aldeburgh and return you to Saxmundham at the end of the day.
